What Are Termites?
Termites are tiny insects that are known for their ability to cause significant damage to homes and buildings. They feed on wood and other cellulose-based materials and can cause serious structural damage if left unchecked.
How To Identify Termites
Termites are usually found by the effects they leave behind, vs actually seeing them in person. Since they love cool, dark, damp spaces, they live mostly underground, coming out only to swarm and feed.
In appearance, they are small and white, slightly longer than a grain of rice with a pair of vicious pincers on their head when viewed closely. During swarming periods, they will also sport wings, which you may see scattered about after they've shed them.
Types of Termites
Subterranean Termites
Subterranean Termites live in colonies underground, from which they build tunnels in search of food. They are able to reach food above the level of the ground by building mud tubes. They are dependent on moisture for survival. Their primary foods are wood and other cellulose material.
Drywood Termites
Drywood Termites have many of the same characteristics as the Subterranean Termite. They have the same diet and are just as destructive!
What Termites Eat
Termites feed on virtually any fiber, including common building materials and household items such as drywall, wood, furniture, cardboard, and more.
